"I was experiencing a lot of fatigue, some pain and generally not feeling well. I had tried changing my diet on my own, but came to the conclusion that I really needed some professional guidance. I know Danielle from graduate school so I contacted her for advice. She helped me analyze my current diet and we immediately made some changes. Through her advice, coaching, guidance and demonstrations (she showed me how to juice and took me shopping at a health food store), I was able to make some immediate changes in my diet and began to feel better almost immediately. She also spent a lot of time teaching me the theory of food. That is, how the food you eat has a direct impact on your emotional and mental well being. I learned a lot from Danielle and will continue to seek out her advice." — Mitch Kent, New York City, NY and Philadelphia, PA

Artemis Teaches WILD Women How to Create a Better World

By: Danielle Heard, MS, HHC

Imagine forever looking at your piece of toast completely different or finally getting why you are so fatigued all the time and are struggling to lose weight, and learning that making different choices not only improves your own health but the health of the World! That is what happened for many of the women who attended Artemis in the City's seminar "Create a Better World with Whole Foods."

The workshop was one of three breakout sessions offered to participants of Women in Longview Day on March 24, 2011 at 8:30 AM and again at 10:00 AM. The workshop covered such topics as the Circle of Life, Food and Healing, Energetics of Food, Farming Practices and provided an Introduction to Local, Sustainable Farmers.

One women was quick to ask after becoming more conscious of her dietary choices, "Okay, so now that I have all this [toxic stuff] inside me, how do I get rid of it? Detox?" The answer provided to her was to be kind to herself, eat healthy and get some sleep!

I think everyone agrees that we had a lot of fun while learning some important information!

"As a presenter at our annual Women in Longview Day, Danielle Heard was an obvious favorite with our participants. Danielle passionately and effectively communicates the message of how our food choices determine our quality of life and longevity. An engaging speaker, a nutritional expert, and an accomplished chef, she challenges her audience to adopt a healthier lifestyle, and she shows them how to do so." — Sandra Skoog, Women in Longview Day Facilitator, Longview, TX

"Danielle's seminar received rave reviews from those who attended at Women in Longview Day. She is an interesting presenter and shares valuable information, motivating listeners to improve their health practices both for prevention and healing purposes." — Janis Canion, Women in Longview Day Seminars Manager, Longview, TX

Historic Longview Farmers Market 2011 Season Kicks Off!

Posted: Mon, Apr 11, 2011
By: Danielle Heard, MS, HHC

The four month long wait is finally over for the shoppers of the Historic Longview Farmers Market. The market's 2011 season will kick-off this weekend on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 8:00 AM in downtown Longview, TX on Cotton St. between High St. and Center St! The market is scheduled to be open every Saturday through November 19, 2011.

The market temporarily closed on December 18, 2010 for the winter after providing East Texas residents with a bounty of beautiful fresh food and artisan products over an eight month period. To view Artemis in the City's Farmers Market Photo Gallery click here.

What is unique about this market is that it is truly a farmers market. No wholesaling is allowed. All products brought to this market are grown or made by area farmers and artists. Shoppers greatly benefit by knowing the source of their food and other products, and their patronage helps stimulate economic growth within the community by supporting local farmers and vendors.

Many of the market's well loved vendors will be returning this season along with some new vendors!

Record Attendance for Whole Foods Seminar in East Texas

Posted: Mon, Mar 21, 2011
By: Danielle Heard, MS, HHC

Wow! The New Year started off with a bang for Artemis in the City as East Texans broke the attendance record for Longview Regional Medical Center’s Healthy Woman Seminars and turned out to learn about whole foods nutrition. The seminar was held on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 and was titled “Wellness Through Whole Food Nutrition.”

Over 100 people made reservations with 85 or more actually attending the event. We were very happily surprised by the interest from the public and even had someone attend the event from as far away as the Dallas, Texas area. It was very unexpected to see people from Texas interested in learning about whole foods nutrition and holistic health. An interest in food and healing among East Texans is noticeably growing – and it is EXCITING!!

“Danielle did a wonderful job of explaining the health benefits of a lifestyle where whole foods are the primary source of nourishment. We had our highest attendance ever at her seminar, and one participant drove two and a half hours to hear her speak. Danielle believes passionately in her work, and the audience was clearly motivated by her talk.”— Claire Henderson, LRMC Healthy Woman Coordinator, Longview, TX

Please call toll-free 866-330-5421 if you would like to arrange for Danielle to speak to your group or organization.

East Texans’ Bad Health Habits Get National Attention

Posted: Mon, Mar 21, 2011
By: Danielle Heard, MS, HHC

“I saw a sad article recently - NY Times, I think - about a town in Texas that said most of the residents don't believe or trust in doctors when it comes to health issues and not surprisingly, they have a huge rate of heart disease, diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases,” said a client of mine who lives in Philadelphia, PA. Naturally when I heard this news, I couldn’t help but feel very sad for my home state that is lacking tremendously in health education efforts and policies to help Texans live healthier lives.

In an article titled, “East Texans’ Bad Health and Bad Habits Promote a ‘Stoke Belt,’” which was published in the New York Times on January 13, 2011, reporter Emily Ramshaw highlights the grim health statistics of Anderson County that have led to the county earning the nickname the Stroke Belt. To read the article click here.

Ramshaw further reports that race and poverty are significantly linked to early deaths among the residents of Anderson County and wrote “The early deaths are a result of high rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancers, afflictions directly linked to lifestyle choices, including poor diet and smoking.”

Additionally, a prevalent attitude among East Texans is “When the good Lord says, ‘It’s time for you to go,’ it’s time for you to go. It ain’t up to me or to nobody else.” There is little to no self responsibility taken to help prevent illness and disease. People in this area live hard and die young eating traditional southern style food such as BBQ, fried catfish, biscuits and gravy combined with modernized fast food and all-you-can-eat restaurant offerings.

Unfortunately, the health care industry in this area also does not walk the talk when it comes to helping people live healthy lives. In her article, Ramshaw reports that an area health care facility, (Read Full Article)

When most people today hear the name Jack LaLanne, they immediately think of health and juicers. Known as the Godfather of Fitness, LaLanne was a fitness, exercise and nutrition expert, a celebrity, lecturer and motivational speaker. Over the years of working with clients, when I mention juicing, they overwhelming have responded with mentions of the Jack LaLanne juicer!

I feel certain that LaLanne was extremely proud of his accomplishments. He not only reached many people with his messages of health, but provided them with affordable products that helped people learn to take control of their health and get started on a healthier path.

LaLanne said, "I've got one thing in my life, helping people to help themselves." For over 75 years, LaLanne inspired people to exercise and eat healthy in order to live a long healthy life. He emphasized to people that, "Anything in life is possible if you make it happen!"

Beginning in the 1930's, LaLanne became a fitness pioneer. He often said, (Read Full Article)
