It is time we put a stop to the corporate manipulation of our food and agriculture policies and farming practices and take back our food! This Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM in New York City, Occupy Against Big Food will be held in Zucotti Park. The organized event will include food policy leaders such as Marion Nestle, PhD and Anna Lappe, MA.  According to Nestle, "The food movement's goal is to make the food system healthier for people and the planet. That goal is entirely consistent with the goals of everyone in the Occupy Wall Street movement." Concerns that corporations have profited from poisoning our food supply, monopolizing farming practices and torturing animals are all clearly outlined in the first official statement released by Occupy Wall St.

Over the past several decades, our food has changed more than any other time in history. Large corporate agriculture businesses have crushed traditional family farms into near extinction with the help of our government that has been heavily influenced by Big Food industry lobbyists.

Our government's agriculture and food policies, legislation and regulations have forced many traditional farmers out of business or pressured them into becoming industrialized farmers. This shift towards corporate farming practices involves the heavy use of harmful pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, growth hormones, antibiotics, irradiation and the genetic engineering and cloning of plant and animal species as well as cruel and inhumane confined animal feedlot operations and slaughter methods.

Corporate farming practices have poisoned our food and polluted the environment,  raised animal cruelty to unfathomable levels, created outbreaks of deadly pathogens, have contaminated organic crops, caused global warming, and led to higher prices for healthy fruits and vegetables forcing many families to predominately eat cheap processed junk food made with government subsidized ingredients.

Unsustainable corporate farming methods and the explosion of corporately developed fake processed foods, which are void of nutrition, and that contain harmful amounts of sugar, salt, GMO's, animal by-products, transfats, chemicals, colorings and preservatives, are linked to the skyrocketing rates of diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity, and the rapid decline of the health of our society.

We must all join together so that our voices will be heard by our representatives. Our food system needs a major overhaul and now is the time for those demands to be made clear to congress. If you are in New York City, please plan to attend this event in support of the growing food movement. It is extremely important that many people show in support of Occupy Against Big Food!

Additionally, congress is currently writing the Farm Bill for 2012. Please write your representatives and senators along with the House Committee on Agriculture and the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry to let them know that our current food system and polices are unacceptable and it is time for change!
