“Care of the soul requires craft – skill, attention, and art. To live with a high degree of artfulness means to attend to the small things that keep the soul engaged in whatever we are doing, and it is the very heart of soul-making.” — Thomas Moore, Ph.D.

Many of you are as concerned as I am about the rights of animals and their treatment. Meeting with your state legislators is one of the best ways to let your representatives know about your concerns and the need for legislative changes. Certainly calling and writing letters are also very effective, but meeting with legislators in person can have a far greater impact and can give a voice to animals who can't speak for themselves.

To create change it takes the support of many people. This is why I hope that you will consider attending one of the Humane Lobby Day events this year that is sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States. If you live in Texas, the Humane Lobby Day event will be held on March 14, 2013 in Austin, Texas. To find out more information on this event and to register, click here. This is an amazing opportunity for you to learn more about citizen lobbying and to meet directly with your state legislators to lobby for legislation that protects endangered species as well as the animals that we consider pets. It is also very urgent and important that this opportunity is also used to highlight the inhumane treatment of farm animals and their lack of basic rights. We must encourage our legislators to change this! We can't do this by ourselves. Our legislators must act on our behalf.

When people like you decide to take a stand on important issues, positive changes occur. Senators decide to throw out agriculture gag bills and pass laws that represent the views of their constituents such as the phasing out of inhumane practices such as the use of battery cages and gestation crates in industrialized farming. There is so much work to be done! Please don't underestimate the power of your participation and voice!

Please get some friends together who share your passion for animals and attend a Humane Lobby Day event near you. If you can't make it this year, please write your legislators to let them know that the humane treatment of animals and their rights should be a top priority in 2013.
