This week is officially Health Coach Week! Beginning January 12th - 18th, Health Coaches are being celebrated for their dedication and work in helping individuals, families and communities improve their health and wellbeing and live healthy lives.

Around the world, the rate of preventable lifestyle disease is on the rise and life expectancy is declining. Scientists conservatively predict that by 2020, 1 out of 2 Americans will be obese and also have diabetes. Obesity and diabetes dramatically increase risks for other life threatening diseases. For example, just having diabetes makes a person 4 times more likely to die of heart disease or a stroke and obesity significantly increases risk for cancer.  Billions of dollars have been spent trying to find the right medication to treat these diseases. But proven effective treatment has already been identified in diet and lifestyle. In fact some research has even shown that healthy lifestyle practices which help people lose weight, lower blood glucose levels and reverse inflammation and disease are more effective than medications.

Recently U.S. Congressional Representative Tim Ryan commended the work of health and wellness coaches as valuable professionals in the health care industry. Here is his letter:

It seems that finally Congress, Doctors, the Senate, Hospitals and People just like you are finally understanding the need for Health Coaches and how they can help people take control of their health. People around the world are suffering and they need caring compassionate health coaches who can support them and teach them positive lifestyle behaviors such as healthy eating, cooking, shopping, exercise and relaxation techniques. If people could do this on their own they would. But with ongoing professional support and learning new information and skills people can change deep rooted negative behaviors which can include hard to break food addictions.

I am proud to be a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) Health Coach program. IIN is the world's largest nutrition school that was founded in 1992 by Joshua Rosenthal. Graduates of IIN are from 123 countries and comprise of over 58,000 alumni and students. Many of the students who attend IIN also include doctors, dietitians and nurses who realized that their standard of care methods were not working for their patients. The program is taught by leaders in the field of health and nutrition who share cutting edge information that enables Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches to learn many dietary theories and skills very quickly. Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches (also known as Holistic Health Counselors) educate and support people as they build healthy new habits and create sustainable lifestyle changes.
