“If you look at your body, you will find billions of living beings who depend on you. Every cell in your body is a living being that depends on you. You are responsible for all of those beings. For all those living beings that are your cells, you are God.” — Don Miguel Ruiz

Just as the new year starts and people hope for good health, luck and prosperity, Haitians have been dealt a very hard blow and have lost everything. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake which hit Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 is the worst earthquake to occur in that region in 200 years.

Many Haitians have barely escaped the devastating destruction caused by this quake with casualties expected to be over 100,000. They have lost their family, friends, homes, jobs and they have no food and water to keep them alive. According to United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, about one-third of the population of Haiti, or approximately 3 million people, have been affected by the earthquake.

Haiti has a long history of economic, political, health and environmental problems. Over-farming and deforestation have left much of this small Caribbean Island without vegetation and more vulnerable to natural disasters. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world where 4 out of 5 people live in poverty. According to Partners In Health (PIH), about one-third of Haitian children die before they reach the age of 5, and 60% of these deaths are completely preventable as they are directly related to a lack of clean water, malnutrition and diarrheal disease.

But Haiti's children are not alone as over 6 million children die worldwide each year due to hunger and malnutrition. Food and water are essential for people to have strong healthy immune systems and to prevent disease. Without nutritional support people cannot heal as effectively under medical care. "Giving drugs without food is like washing your hands and drying them in the dirt," - a Haitian proverb.

Haiti's S.O.S for help was finally heard around the world this week. It is unfortunate that it has taken such a catastrophic disaster for more people to respond and care for these people in need. But the help Haiti receives now can potentially save thousands of lives. If you have not made a donation to a charity of your choice, please donate now to help rebuild Haiti stronger and better than before.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti after the Earthquake on January 12, 2010:

Help Haiti Now!

If you are looking for credible organizations to make a donation to help Haiti, please consider making a donation to one of these organizations. Haiti needs help and support long-term.

Partners in Health
The American Red Cross
Clinton Bush Haiti Fund
Habitat for Humanity
Mercy Corps
Unicef
World Food Programme

For additional organizations, CNN offers a helpful list on their "Impact Your World" website page, click here.

Money is the best form of a donation to give. Keep in mind that when you text your donation from your cell phone, it is not as instantaneous as making a donation with your credit card. It will take a billing cycle for the money to be donated to the organization after you pay your phone bill.

No one is protected from a natural disaster such as this. It can happen to anyone of us. This past week I have once again found myself being extremely grateful for everything that I have in my life, especially clean water to drink, healthy food to eat, a warm safe home with electricity and plumbing, and the people and pets that I love.

We must all work together to not only help people in need around the world, but we must all make conscious efforts to help protect our Earth. We must do everything possible to prevent further deforestation, harmful farming practices and pollution from poisoning our food and water. No amount of money can save lives if we destroy our planet. Each day you can make choices that are sustainable and that promote a healthy life and planet. You help determine the future of humanity by the choices that you make.

Thank you very much for reading my blog and please continue to visit often.

I wish you good health, happiness and love!

Danielle
